Increased Security Measures at Thornton Township High School and Thornwood High School Following Social Media Threats

On September 17, 2024, Thornton Township High School District 205 activated its emergency response protocol after threats of violence were posted on Instagram targeting both Thornton Township High School in Harvey and Thornwood High School in South Holland.

At Thornton, a “soft lockdown” was implemented, with no visitors allowed, and metal detectors were used to scan all students and staff upon entry. Administrators worked closely with the Harvey Police, Cook County Sheriff, and the Thornton Township High School security team to monitor the situation. Although the threat was deemed not credible, the district treated the matter seriously due to the fear and disruption caused by such hoaxes.

Similarly, Thornwood High School initiated "restricted access" measures. Visitors were redirected to a parking lot near the district office and escorted into the building after thorough security screenings. The South Holland Police Department increased its presence in and around the school to ensure safety.

The district reminds all students and staff to stay alert and report anything suspicious. If you see something, say something.
