The Student Board of Education members attended the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute at Eastern Illinois University for a 5-day youth leadership conference. Members learned about how to uphold leadership positions and how to hone their leadership skills. Members also learned about each other and received feedback on how to positively impact their communities.

Student Board of Education members attended a teen summit to discuss the current reality minority teens are facing. Members also explored various ways in which the challenges faced by minority teens could be remedied.

The Student Board of Education members attended an education summit hosted by the South Suburban Action Conference. Members learned about Senate Bill 100 and the current state of education in the South Suburban area.

The Student Board of Education members attended District 205’s Teacher Institute Day, where members greeted the district faculty and staff members and welcomed them back for the new school year. President Motunrola Adebogun gave a welcome address to the faculty and Curriculum and Instructions Chairperson, Rebecca Ayiku, introduced the keynote speaker.

The Student Board of Education members attended Freshman Orientation at each of their respective schools. Members assisted the students from the class of 2021 into their new home for four years!
 
 
 
August 19, 2017
 
The Student Board of Education members volunteered at the Taste of Thornton Township where members participated in Thornton Township’s annual Disney Princess/Superhero Breakfast. Members helped the Thornton Township team set up, served breakfast, passed out treats and toys to children, dressed up as characters for the children, and directed traffic to ensure the safety of those participating in the event.
 
 
 
September 15, 2017
 
The Student Board of Education members volunteered at Restoration Ministries for the afterschool program, where members assisted teachers in classes ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. Members read to the children, helped them with their homework, and taught lessons to them.
 
 
 
September 16 & 23, 2017
 
The Student Board of Education members attended a two day, eight hour long Restorative Justice Training. Members were trained by Dr. Shaniqua Jones in Restorative Justice. At the training, members learned how to facilitate Restorative Justice circles and took an in depth look at peer mediation. Members also learned about various restorative alternatives to punitive punishments.

The Student Board of Education members attended the South Suburban Action Conference dinner to celebrate the anniversary of the South Suburban Action Conference initiative.

The Student Board of Education members attended a team-building field trip where members had to use critical thinking and team-work skills to solve clues on how to escape the room before time was up.

The Student Board of Education members attended the Alumni Day Hall of Fame Celebration where members greeted in the guests and passed out tickets for a raffle. Members also helped assist the guest in anything that they needed and celebrated the induction of Dr. Jerry B. Doss into Thornton’s Hall of Fame.

The Student Board of Education partnered with Catholic Charities who sponsored the food drive, attended a two-day event, where members help load up the food into cardboard crates. Members also passed out and collected bags of food over the South Holland area.
 
 
 
November 20, 2017
 
The Student Board of Education organized and hosted their first ever college panel where members cordially invited eight panelists to speak to the students of district 205 in regards to their post-secondary plan. Members conducted raffles on Prom tickets and SWAG bags in which one senior from each school won a Prom ticket, as well as a fourth ticket was given to any senior in the district with the gratitude from Mr. John Arrington.

The Student Board of Education members visited Thornton Township to see the annual Christmas tree turn its lights on. Members helped assist children to take pictures with Santa Clause and directed the public.

The Student Board of Education members attended the CEDA Forum at the Harvey Public Library where members were split into groups and discussed about the issues they were dealing with in their lives and in their community.
 
 
 
January 15, 2018
 
The Student Board of Education attended the Martin Luther King JR. Event held at South Suburban College. Members helped seat in fellow politicians, administration, faculty staff and guests at the beginning of the event. Members also greeted in guests and passed out programs. President Motunrola Adebogun gave a majestic speech to the guests at this event in honor of Martin Luther King JR, as well as Vice-President Kaylynn Arrington.

The Student Board of Education attended a field trip to Glazed Expressions where members picked out a piece of clay art to decorate. Members used their higher-level thinking skills to decorate the clay how they wanted to, as well as concentration to perfect their piece of art.

The Student Board of Education attended Teacher Institute Day held at Thornton Township High School where members played an active role in this Student-led event. President Motunrola Adebogun gave a welcoming address to the faculty staff and administration. Student Board members introduced speakers and helped facilitate the event.

The Student Board of Education went on a field trip to the Cinema 8 Movie Theatre to watch the premiere release of the Black Panther Movie. Members were first introduced to a keynote speaker who was an original Black Panther and discussed what life was like being a Black Panther. The keynote speaker also discussed the relevance of this movie and how impactful it was for the creation of this movie.

The Student Board of Education attended a dinner hosted by Catholic Charities to celebrate their 30th anniversary of their initiative.

The Student Board attended the Family And Community Engagement event at South Suburban College hosted by Dr. Albert J. Holmes JR. Members help assist Dr. Holmes for the preparation of the event such as greeting in guests, having a member in charge at the registration table, making sure all community partnerships were set up and having all the guest speakers at the event. Members also multi-task in helping Dr. Holmes make sure everything was ready for the guests to take involvement in.

The Student Board organized and hosted their first ever Illinois State Scholars’ Dinner for the 30 Illinois State Scholars’ in District 205. Members had multiple roles at this event where we had members in charge at the registration table, greeting in our guests, PowerPoint presentation and passing out our awards to the Illinois State Scholars’. At the dinner, the scholars received a trophy outlining their accomplishment.
 
 
 
April 5 & 12, 2018
 
The Student Board participated in the annual Student Exchange where students from Schaumburg High School and Thornton Township High School got to experience the similarities and differences both schools had, as well as the communities the students are from. Students also gain beneficial feedback from the students participating in the exchange and learned what could be done better for next year’s exchange.

The Student Board of Education attended a Youth Empowerment Conference held at Thornridge High School. Members greeted guests and helped with registration. Students were able to attend beneficial workshops, such as “Free tuition and Volunteering” and “Junior Achievement/ Personal Finance”.
