Safe Schools Initiative

Thornton Township High School District 205 has implemented a new Safe Schools Initiative designed to address violence in schools. Unfortunately, the increase of violence is not happening only in District 205 schools. Incidents of mob-like fighting are occurring in schools all around the State of Illinois and the nation. Fighting is unacceptable in our schools and our communities. As a district, we must provide a safe and secure environment for our students to learn and for our faculty to teach. Safe schools are and always will be a top priority in District 205.

Students who engage in vicious attacks are a threat to students, faculty, staff, and themselves. Their acts of violence against each other revolve on an all-too-frequent basis. Their actions cause chaos in our schools. Their negative behavior has impacted morale, and it will no longer be tolerated. 

By order of District 205’s School Board of Education and Administration, the Safe Schools Initiative empowers school officials to respond to school fighting using all measures at their disposal.

Effective Monday, November 15, 2021, our district administration and schools’ officials:

•        will not tolerate acts of violence and mob-like fighting in our schools,

•        will call the police to our schools,

•        are prepared to file charges against students who engage in acts of violence, such as fighting,

•        will fully cooperate with police and the State’s Attorney by providing video footage of acts of violence.

Effectively Monday, November 15, 2021, students will face severe consequences for their actions, including suspension, expulsion, and charges. 

Collectively, our message must be clear. Any incident that disrupts school safety or the ability of teachers to teach and students to learn will be met with severe consequences.
